Alleviate Congestion Naturally with Essential Oils

Congestion occurs when there is a blockage in the nasal passages, sinuses, or upper respiratory tract (chest). This blockage is caused by inflamed tissues and blood vessels due to increased mucus production.

FREE Essential Oils Ebook for Beginners: Audible eBook or PDF eBook

Symptoms of congestion:

  • Stuffiness
  • Nasal discharge
  • Coughing
  • Headache
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Chest tightness

Causes of congestion:

  • Exposure to cold temperatures
  • Allergies/allergens (food, pet hair, milk, medication, smoke, dust etc.)
  • Fragrances (perfumes, colones, air freshers, laundry soap, fabric softeners)
  • Household cleaners
  • Cigarette smoke/smoking
  • Common cold/Influenza

Congestion usually responds to essential oil treatments because many of them have anti-inflammatory and expectorant (loosens and clears mucus and phlegm from the respiratory tract) properties.

There are three different methods of application that can be used to treat congestion with essential oils.

  • Steam treatment
  • Chest/back rub
  • Diffusing

Here are my favorite essential oils for the symptoms of congestion:

Congestion Steam Treatment (my favorite for immediate relief)

  • 2 cups of hot water
  • 2 drops Rosemary
  • 2 drops Cardamom
  • 1 drop Peppermint
  • 1 drop Tea Tree (Melaleuca)
  • 1 drop Frankincense
  1. In a glass bowl, add the hot water along with the above essential oils and stir.
  2. Sit or stand in a comfortable position.
  3. With a towel, make a tent over your head and bowl with hot water.
  4. Breathe in the aroma for about 5-10 minutes.
  5. Repeat the treatment every 2-3 hours as needed.

Have Kleenex handy!

Respiratory Aromatherapy Treatment Methods

The method in which you apply essential oils has a direct effect on how they impact your respiratory needs.

Aromatherapy is a aromatic method of inhaling essential oils in some form. Some methods expose your respiratory system to more of the essential oils than others. You will want to choose a method that will best meet your needs and symptoms.

FREE Ebook: Emotional Benefits of Aromatherapy

Diffusion (diffuser):

This is the most popular method of aromatherapy treatments. Not all diffusers are equal, you can find them in many different colors and styles, water and water-less, and in a wide price range. Make sure you choose a diffuser made of medical grade plastic and a cold-air diffuser that breaks the oils up into a fine mist by using ultrasonic vibrations. This method allows essential oils to stay suspended in the air for hours so you can benefit from the therapeutic properties of the essential oils.

The aroma from the suspended essential oils improves the room’s atmosphere by removing airborne pathogens that causes odors and colds. Essential oils do not mask odor like commercial air fresheners, they interact with molecules our bodies recognize as odors.

Direct inhalation:

This is a method all of us do any time you sample a perfume, bottle of essential oils, any time we smell any product. Direct inhalation is a powerful, effective, and simple method for receiving the benefits of aromatherapy. Place a drop or two of essential oil in the palm of your hand, rub your hands together, cup your hands over your nose and mouth, inhale deeply, repeat with three to five deep breaths. One of my most favorite oils to use for this is peppermint and wild orange. Peppermint first then wild orange. This mixture is known as the energy shot.

The direct inhalation method allows close-up exposure to the essential oil’s volatile molecules which allows you to experience health benefits immediately.

olfactory diagram

Hot water vapors (steam treatment):

Hot water vapor treatments is the use of steaming hot water in a glass bowl with a few drops of essential oils. You place your face over the steam and inhale while a towel is covering your head, shoulders, and bowl. This allows the essential oils to make contact with the respiratory tract tissues. This method is best for colds, allergies, and any other respiratory aliment that affects the upper respiratory system. When essential oils are delivered to the respiratory system in this manor they aid in relieving congestion and decreasing mucus membrane inflammation.

Influenza and Essential Oils

Influenza (flu) is a highly contagious viral infection that attacks your respiratory system — your sinuses, throat and lungs. Symptoms are much like those of the common cold, are often followed by aches, chills, and fever. Influenza sits in faster and harder than a cold does. Typically begins with the run-down feeling whereas a cold usually begins with a sore throat and or runny nose.

Common signs and symptoms of influenza include:

  • Fever over 100.4 F (38 C)
  • Aching muscles, especially in your back, arms and legs
  • Chills and sweats
  • Headache
  • Dry, persistent cough
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Nasal congestion
  • Sore throat
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea

Many of the same antiviral essential oils that work for cold symptoms are equally effective against influenza by boosting the immune system and keeping the virus from growing out of control. The faster you take action, the less severe your symptoms, the faster you’ll feel better.

Here are my favorite essential oils for the symptoms of influenza:

Flu Bath Treatment

  • 1 tablespoon carrier oil
  • 2 drops melaleuca
  • 2 drops marjoram
  • 1 drop basil
  1. In a glass bowl, combine the carrier oil and essential oils, stir.
  2. Draw a hot bath and add the mixture to the running water.
  3. Soak for at least 15 minutes. The bathtub maybe slippery, use caution when getting out.
  4. Repeat as needed until symptoms subside.

Flu Chest Rub

  • 2 ounces carrier oil
  • 3 drops eucalyptus
  • 1 drop lemongrass
  • 1 drop oregano
  1. In a dark-colored glass bottle (I reuse my empty oil bottles), combine the carrier oil and essential oils, shake to blend.
  2. Add several drops to the palm of your hand and rub on your chest.
  3. Repeat several times a day as needed.
  4. Store in a cool, dry place.

Diffuser

  • 2-3 drops eucalyptus
  • Place in the room where you spend the most time.

Eucalyptus can help stop the spread of viruses when diffused. It also aids in reducing inflammation and discomfort in influenza sufferers.

Sinusitis and Essential Oils

Sinuses are several hollow cavities within the skull that allow the skull to be lightweight without compromising strength. These cavities are connected to the nasal cavity through small channels. When the mucous membrane lining becomes swollen or inflamed, the sinuses are unable to drain correctly. This can lead to infection and sinusitis.

2

Sign up for my email subscription and receive a FREE Essential Oils Ebook for Beginners.

Sinusitis is the inflammation or an infection of the mucus membranes lining in the sinuses and inner nasal passages. Sinusitis is caused by bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Symptoms will present themselves as blocked nasal passages, headache, fever, dental pain, reduced sense of small and or taste, bad breath, and a cough that produces mucus.

Essential oils can help ease the symptoms.

Some of my favorite essential oils for sinusitis are: peppermint, rosemary, eucalyptus, and thyme. They help decrease sinus pressure, inflammation, and open the airways.

Diffuser Blend:

  • 2 drops peppermint
  • 2 drops rosemary
  • 1 drop eucalyptus
  • 1 drop thyme

Diffuse throughout the day.

Waking Up with Low Energy?

If you find yourself waking up in the mornings with incredibly low energy levels then you’re not alone. This is how many of us feel first thing in the morning and it’s what encourages so many of us to just crawl back under the covers instead of springing out of bed in order to get productive.

Sign up for my email subscription and receive a FREE Essential Oils Ebook for Beginners.

Some people though will find that they feel much worse than others in the morning and this can be a real problem when you have lots to get done. If you’re waking up and not feeling refreshed then it’s important to find out why and to do something about it.

Dehydration

One reason we often feel rough in the morning is actually that we’re dehydrated. This is a long time for our bodies to go without food or drink and as such it’s easy to wake up with a dry throat and headache. Gulping down a few glasses of water before bed is a great way to circumvent this problem and if it’s really bad you can even consider eating some Chia Seeds which are great for keeping you hydrated.

Low Blood Sugar

Likewise, it might be that you actually have low blood sugar for the same reasons. If you wake up in the morning and you feel sick and shaky, consider that you might need to eat a little more food – especially sweet food – before bed. Some people even suggest that this is the reason we’ve evolved in order to crave sweet things after we’ve eaten savory.

If you do not like to eat right before bed, try using doTERRA Cinnamon essential oil to aid in balancing blood sugar levels. doTERRA’s Cinnamon essential oil is safe to take internally, use in a diffuser while you sleep and or use topically.

Apnea

Sleep apnea is a condition that causes you to wake up repeatedly in the night because you’re stopping breathing. The problem is that most people wake so briefly that they actually have no recollection of doing so at all and thus they never realize they have a problem. Ask your partner to watch you sleep and if you have an issue, see a doctor about a CPAP machine.

Even with a CPAP machine, people find themselves struggling with getting a good nights sleep. Incorporate doTERRA’s Serenity Restful Complex Softgels into your nightly bed routine. This is a unique combination of Lavender essential oil and natural plant extracts in a vegetarian softgel to help you get the refreshing sleep you need without leaving you feeling groggy and sleepy the next day.

Depression

Depression can also often cause you to not want to get out of bed – and our energy levels and moods are very tightly linked. SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) can cause depression-like symptoms in the winter. What’s more, antidepressants such as Barbiturates list ‘difficulty waking up’ as one of their potential side effects.

Here is a safer and effective way to help with depression symptoms. Try using dōTERRA’s Motivate Encouraging Blend when setbacks, disappointments, or a lack of inspiration weigh you down. This amazing blend helps plant positivity within you while melting away cynicism and doubt.

Allergy

Finally, if you have a very scratchy throat in the morning and it’s not dehydration, it might be an allergy. Try sleeping with the window closed and see if that helps.

Add a Petal diffuser next to your bed while you are sleeping with a couple drops of dōTERRA’s Breathe Respiratory Blend. This popular blend maintains feelings of clear airways and easy breathing while minimizing the effects of seasonal threats, calms the senses and promotes a restful sleep.

Let’s Talk About The Importance Of Rest

People don’t get enough sleep. If they did, they wouldn’t sleep on the train or bus during their commute. Hopefully, people who drive to work don’t attempt the same, although sometimes people do fall asleep at the wheel.

FREE eBook Essential Oils and Sleep: Audible eBook or PDF eBook

Rest is similar to sleep. You need to get enough sleep. This will help you feel refreshed. However, rest can be extended to include taking a break, even when you are awake. For instance, you probably have heard personal trainers say take a rest, although they don’t do this as often as we’d like.

Sometimes, getting rest can be as simple as watching television, reading a book or Yoga with essential oils. Your mind is busy with the day’s events and unwinding can be attributed to your rest.

Substances such as alcohol and drugs can interrupt your rest. For instance, if you drink more than two drinks of alcohol, you may fall asleep faster but you will wake up in the middle of the night. It will be more difficult to get back to sleep because you were in such a deep sleep. Drugs alter sleep and rest patterns as well. When you abuse drugs, you are putting your body on a roller-coaster ride which disrupts your normal routine. There is a natural alternative to help you rest/sleep. dōTERRA Serenity Restful Complex is a unique combination of Lavender essential oil and natural plant extracts in a vegetarian softgel to help you get the refreshing sleep you need without leaving you feeling groggy and sleepy the next day.

Your diet can mess with your ability to rest as well. If you constantly eat spicy foods or the wrong types of foods, your stomach will experience distress. It’s quite difficult to get any rest when this happens. You may take DigestZen Softgels Digestive Blend to alleviate the distress, ultimately you want to have the best diet possible for you body.

Rest and sleep are both ways to recharge your mind and your body. Without it, you will be irritable and you could be putting your health in danger.

Do you have a hard time resting? If you are like me, the answer will be yes. AromaTherapy can be an amazing tool to help you rest even if it’s only for five minutes. AromaTherapy is the use of essential oils to affect or alter a person’s mood or behavior. You can experience AromaTherapy two different ways: add essential oils to a diffuser or place essential oils directly to the skin with a carrier oil.

Here is a great list of doTERRA essential oils to help you get started:
