Have you ever wondered why so many people are using essential oils these day? When I was first introduced to them, I asked myself the same question. I even thought my friend of four years had lost her mind and fell off the hippy wagon when she introduced them to me. It’s okay to have these feelings and thoughts!

Curiosity got me… I had to know why people were using essential oils for their medical needs especially since I am a respiratory therapist and I had not heard about this form of medical treatment.

Essential Oils have been used for thousands of years providing individuals a safe and natural alternative to chemically based medications. They are used for a wide range of emotional and physical wellness needs and have few, if any, undesirable side effects when used as directed.

Our immune systems are the body’s defense system. They are designed to protect us against threats from outside the body.  Essential oils are antibacterial and antiviral which means they can directly attack germs and kill them at the root. While the essential oils are attacking germs within our bodies, they are also stimulating the immune and respiratory systems so they will be better prepared to fight off future illness.

Once essential oils reach the bloodstream whether it’s through aromatic, topical or internal use; they promote whole-body healing by working at a cellular level. Essential oils have 50 times more oxygen than what plants provide. As the blood delivers nutrients and oxygen to cells, it is the oxygenating molecules that allow the essential oils to penetrate and carry nutrients through the cell wall to the cell nucleolus for feeding and oxidation. This makes them nature’s most effective catalyst and delivery agent for feeding our cells.

What an amazing way to protect our immune systems!

These naturally occurring, volatile aromatic compounds are found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other plant parts. They are both beautifully and a powerfully fragrant.

They give plants their distinctive smells and the essential oils protect the plants against environmental threats and play a role in plant pollination.

In addition to their intrinsic benefits to plants and being a beautifully fragrant to people, essential oils have long been used for food preparation, beauty treatments, and health care practices.

Now that you know what and where essential oils comes from, let’s talk about what a volatile aromatic compound is. These compounds are small organic molecules that tend to change quickly from their solid or liquid state to a gas at room temperature. They are called volatile because they change state quickly. When you first open a bottle of essential oil, you instantly notice that the aroma is potent and you can smell it typically even from some distance. The physical and chemical properties of the volatile aromatic compounds that compose essential oils allow them to quickly move through the air and directly interact with the olfactory sensors in the nose. These unique properties make essential oils ideal for aromatherapy.

What is aromatherapy? The act of using essential oils from plants to help maintain a healthy mind and body by inhaling them. Have you ever burned a candle or incense to change your mood or create a certain mood in a room? Same concept but without the chemicals from burning something or harsh chemicals. The type of volatile aromatic compounds present in an essential oil determines both the oil’s aroma and the benefits it offers.

Over 3,000 varieties of volatile aromatic compounds have been identified to date. The nature of an essential oil varies from plant to plant, within botanical families, and from species to species. The delicate ratio of aromatic constituents found in any given essential oil are what make it unique and give it specific benefits.

Even with pure essential oils the composition of the oil can vary depending on the time of day, season, geographic location, method and duration of distillation, year grown, and the weather, making every step of the production process a critical determinant of the overall quality of the essential oil product.

Essential oils can be used for a wide range of emotional and physical wellness applications. They can be used as single essential oils or in complex essential oil blends depending on user experience and desired benefit.
